The Great Rann of Kutch: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

The Great Rann of Kutch

About the Destination: Rann of Kutch is an incomprehensible stretch of dry land, landscape, or even inland sea that will leave you truly speechless. It is both nerve-wracking and beautiful: an endless void with tiny oases of water bodies and shrub forests where pink flamingoes and wild asses live.

The center of concentration for brush-splattered tin and clay pots for tribal hamlets with round mud bhungas (huts) all around rogan painting from the one surviving family left expert at this. 200 km to the east of the Rann is the Little Rann of Kutch, where the 4953-sq-km Wild Ass Sanctuary lies. It still hosts the last surviving population of the drylands earthen Indian wild ass (Khur, Equus hemionus Khur), blue bulls, blackbucks, and chinkaras.

Rann of Kutch Overview:

The Great Rann of Kutch

Short History: Once upon a time it was a great coastal shallow of the Arabian Sea, before stable tectonic conditions closed off its connection with the sea. The region eventually turned into a seasonal marshy salt desert during millennia. Its waterlogging during monsoons widens the wetland from Gulf of Kutch in west to Gulf of Cambay in east. The water submerged during the rainy season, leaving behind a salty land with a crunchy crust in summer.
